Flying Mounts in Northrend

There are several high-level instances and zones in Northrend that require flying mounts to access them, however these mounts will not be allowed until level 77. At that point, players can complete a relatively easy quest chain to gain the Cold Weather Flying ability, which allows them to use those mounts again. Developers have stated that this restriction is being put into place because they do not want people to "skip over" content.

It has been confirmed by Bornakk that the following quest line, while still in place, no longer rewards the player with Cold Weather Flying. Cold Weather Flying is currently available on the mount trainer in Dalaran for 950 gold, and it has been indicated that this price will remain in live.

Flying Mount Questline

Information and images from MMO-Champion's Northrend Flying Mount Questline Guide:

  • Level up to 77 and head to Sholazar Basin.
  • Speak to Weslex Quickwrench in the Nesingwary Base Camp and do his questline if you didn't do it yet, at this point you probably already completed it while leveling.
  • Once the Spirit of Gnomeregan is repaired, speak to Professor Calvert and accept the quest, "Aerial Surveillance."
  • Go to Lakeslide Landing near River's Heart and talk to Pilot Vic there. (See the Sholazar Basin Map.)
  • The first quest he gives, "An Embarrassing Incident", is a short quest to find his keys in the lake next to him.
  • The 2nd quest, "Reconnaissance Flight", will let you go in a reconnaissance flight with Pilot Vic. After defending your airplane against undead attackers, you will eventually have to control it after one of the shot hits Pilot Vic.
  • When you have completed the objectives, head back to the Lakeslide Landing, turn in the quest, and ...
  • Enjoy your flying mount!

Multi-passenger Mounts

In Wrath of the Lich King, some mounts acquired in Northrend will be able to carry passengers. Developers have stated that characters of any level will be able to ride them, making it possible to give a lift to a low-level friend!

Some examples of multi-passenger mounts currently present in the game files (but not yet available in-game) are the Multi-passenger Mammoth Mount and the Motorbike.

Mounts can now Swim

It was announced at one of the Q&A sessions at Blizzcon that after the first content patch in WotLK, mounts will now swim instead of disappearing when they hit the water. It is unknown whether they will move at the players swim speed, the normal mounted speed, or somewhere in between. No indication has been given that water-specific mounts will be added.

Mount Storage Changes

The New Pet/Mount System Interface
To help ease storage concerns in the new expansion, Blizzard is implementing an entirely new system in which all Vanity Pets and Mounts are learned like spells and stored in an interface much like that of a Hunter's pets. This interface is accessible off of the Character sheet. (See the image at left.)

From the official EU Beta Forums:

We’re pleased to announce a convenient upgrade to the way that mounts and vanity pets are handled in Wrath of the Lich King.

Players will be able to “learn” a mount or non-combat pet much like learning a spell, recipe, or new ability, and these creatures will then show up on a new Pet tab within the Character Info section of the interface. Players will be able to access and preview their learned mounts and vanity pets through this tab.

Once learned, the pet icon or mount icon will no longer appear in bag spaces or bank spaces. This inventory space will be made available once again for other adventuring needs. Pets can still be set to hotkeys by dragging them to the hotkey bar, much like any other spell or ability.
