I don’t see Criske’s argument on how this spell would instantly draw other mobs away and wipe the group. In Naxx being able to nuke mobs of abominations, slimes, or spiders from a distance is a lot better than running up to their face with a magma totem, getting poisoned/stunned in the process. In Culling of Stratholme the alley fight, where there are zombies everywhere, enemies are right up close to you would be the perfect time for a spell to have a wide birth but a short range. Its having so much damage on a single target that often pulls threat down on top of me. Especially if the mob I’m targeting isn’t being attacked by the tank at that moment. As this is an argument for AoE I would say let the spell remain active as long as there is something to hit. Just like my case for the zombies on Gluth the spell needs to nuke low hp mobs from a distance consistently.

Chriske does have a point that Blizz would probably nerf us for getting anything new to dps. I do hope that Blizz knows that elemental shamans just need an AoE nuke and not a nerf to their role as ranged dps.

Personally the spell just looks cool. Part of the whole reason I re-rolled a shaman was to play a casting/healing class with style. Elemental shamans eat lightning and crap thunder. Shooting lightning that arcs from person to person (Chain Lightning) is cool. Spraying 1.21 giga-watts of electricity over hapless enemies would be epic.

Sorry, my bad. I could have been clearer...

Range = 20 Yards
At 20 yards let’s say that our cone has a width of 5 yards.
With our relitavely small width of 5 yards our total area covered is 50 yards.

Now what happens if you pull aggro... Mob runs at you...
Range now = 1 yard… Width = 50 yards
If there is another pack of mobs in the room you likely just pulled them…

Even with a 99% success rate this spell would not be worth using… With the abundance of AoE options in the raid today, padding one person’s DPS is simply not worth risking a wipe… Ever!

Sure it looks cool but unfortunately it just doesn’t have a place in our repertoire without some major changes.

One other thing I wanted to mention:
Any additional spell added to the Shaman needs to take into account proper range.
Here's an exercise: Take a look at the following damage dealing spells available to Elemental Shaman. Can you guess where Blizzard wants you to stand? (Hint: The answer is not 20 yards)

Shocks 35 Yard
Lightning Bolt 36 Yards
Chain Lightning 36 Yards
Lava Burst 36 Yards
Thunderstorm 0 Yards from mob for best benifit
Totems 0 Yards from mob for best benifit

The spell did not mention any maximum length or width in regards to its range. It can’t, the spell hasn’t been finished yet. There is a lot about this spell that has yet to be explained in specific detail. If you want to be clear please use actual facts.

Shamans do not have any spell that can nuke from a distance. Every other ranged dps class does. Don’t forget shadow priest have Mind Sear. This is not about padding dps but being entitled to what has already been given to every ranged dps class. The spell is long overdue and would be a great addition to elemental shaman’s spell book.
